Dog
The domestic dog demonstrates remarkable consistency in its core function of companionship. Barring illness, a dog provides daily emotional support without patches, updates, or server maintenance. It cannot be discontinued by a corporate decision or rendered obsolete by a sequel. Dogs function during power outages, internet failures, and global pandemics. The technology required to operate a dog - food and water - has remained unchanged for millennia.
However, dogs do require healthcare, age, and eventually pass away. The average lifespan of 10-13 years guarantees eventual loss.
Pikachu
Pikachu's reliability depends entirely upon corporate infrastructure. Access requires functional hardware, software, and in many cases, internet connectivity. Nintendo's servers may cease operation; cartridge batteries expire; consoles break and become obsolete. The Pikachu encountered in 1996 on a Game Boy Colour is not accessible through a PlayStation 5. Platform exclusivity creates artificial limitations on an already ephemeral relationship.
Pikachu cannot age or die naturally, yet it faces technological obsolescence that biological creatures do not.
